Brief Description of the Project

Ministry of Tourism, with an objective to develop world-class destinations in the country through an integrated and holistic approach, identified 17 well-known destinations to be developed as Iconic Tourism Destinations of India. These were namely Taj Mahal & Fatehpur Sikri (Uttar Pradesh), Ajanta &
Ellora (Maharashtra), Humayun’s Tomb, Red Fort & Qutub Minar (Delhi), Colva (Goa), Amer Fort (Rajasthan), Somnath & Dholavira (Gujarat), Khajuraho (Madhya Pradesh), Hampi (Karnataka), Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu), Kaziranga (Assam), Kumarakom (Kerala) and Mahabodhi Temple (Bihar).

Ministry shall be developing these sites in collaboration with the Central Ministries, State Governments, and Local Bodies, in a holistic manner, with a focus on improving connectivity & access, facilities & experiences, skillset, involvement of the local community, promotion & branding, and by bringing-in private investment.

Services Provided

Swadesh Darshan Program Management team consisting of 10 members delivered the following scope of services –

  1. Undertook benchmarking studies & stakeholder consultations including site visits to identified iconic destinations with government departments, Hospitality, Tour and Travel Industry representatives, Private Stakeholders, Associations, and Public representatives.
  2. Prepared a vision, strategy, and concept for the development of Iconic Sites in India as Iconic Tourism Destinations.
  3. Formulation of comprehensive scheme guidelines and its approval from the Government of India.
  4. Assisted in the selection of master planning agencies through the development of RFP and other bidding documents.
  5. Review of Master Plans and regular liaising with States/UTs/ other stakeholders.
  6. Evaluation of Master Plans prepared by selected agencies and assisted in gap analysis.
  7. Presentations to the Ministry of Finance & PMO regarding approval of the scheme.
